Daytona Beach is known for 23 miles of sunny beaches, but this city also has a strong artistic presence. Its painters are recognized in museums, private collections and art galleries around the world. A wide range of styles are represented by this community, from impressionism to abstract expressionism.
The oldest arts organization in Volusia County, the Daytona Beach Art League, was founded in 1927. Its members have a passion for art and want to share it with the public. The group started as an informal sketching club, but eventually evolved into a more formalized organization.
The group is dedicated to promoting and encouraging the arts, and it seeks to encourage artists to develop their talent by offering educational and exhibition opportunities. The members of the art league are drawn from all walks of life and are committed to the pursuit of excellence in their work.
Art Battle, an exciting live competitive painting competition, is being held on April 9. This event will feature 12 painters who will compete in three rounds. The top two painters from each round will advance to the final round. The audience will vote to determine the winner of the event.
Artist Mary Anne James was born in Daytona Beach Daytona Beach painters to Southern parents and has always loved expressing herself through visual forms. She has traveled extensively throughout her career, visiting many of the countries in the Middle East and exploring different cultures and religions. This experience has allowed her to ask more ethereal questions about God and the meaning of life.
A painter specializing in landscapes, Mary Anne loves to use a variety of techniques and media in her works. She also teaches painting classes. She has won numerous awards and is in several private collections. She is an active member of the Daytona Beach Art League and the Florida Federation of Art.
Robert Norman Ross, better known as Bob Ross, was born in Daytona Beach and died in New Smyrna Beach. He was a television personality and painter who encouraged millions of people around the world to pick up a brush and discover The Joy of Painting. Ross also taught classes and workshops.
Florida is a popular destination for tourists and transplants, so it’s no surprise that a large number of local painters find inspiration in the sunshine and tropical scenery. The Hub on Canal is a unique venue for the local artistic scene, with a combination of studio and gallery spaces in one building. The space is home to more than 75 local artists and hosts a range of events.
Cici and Hyatt Brown began collecting paintings featuring scenes of Florida 25 years ago, and their collection now includes more than 350 pieces. They own the largest collection of Florida art in the world, and some of it can be seen at their private museum located on a barrier island south of Daytona Beach. The rest of the paintings are displayed in the Art Center at New Smyrna, which the couple helped found in 2012. The non-profit museum is devoted to the advancement of the visual arts.
